I would judge these black marks to be situated on the tips of the median coverts rather than base of greater coverts.
Excellent shots. I think Black Guillemots are tamer in Ireland than Newfoundland where they tend to keep a one gun shot radius around a human being. Coincidentally my best shots of the species are from Bangor, Northern Ireland where they were nesting in the side of a well used and very public pier oblivious to the tourists.

B MactavishBruce Mactavishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02354860540379635005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1422040189937711491.post-72775241791436828842014-07-16T15:02:38.578-07:002014-07-16T15:02:38.578-07:00I photographed at least one Black Guillemot here i...I photographed at least one Black Guillemot here in Ireland this April with black bases to the greater coverts, the tenth shot down here http://dermotbreen.blogspot.ie/2014/04/inishbofin-black-guillemots.htmlDermot Breenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15333445847314331794noreply@blogger.com
